Corella Place, Ararat |
Warrack Rd, Ararat VIC |
Corella Place is a 40-bed transitional facility, accommodating residents in 1, 2, and 3-bed accommodation.
Central recreation areas provide passive and active recreation opportunities, and a highly flexible administration area optimizes staff amenity and safety.
Close attention has been paid to allow for residents to be kept separate from others where necessary, whilst maintaining a non-punitive environment. Staff interaction is intentional and noticeable, but relaxed, maintaining supervision in a passive manner.
The Masterplanning and building layouts were designed to optimise solar orientation, and facilitate natural ventilation. Residences are hydronically heated, reverse-veneer construction (for thermal mass), naturally cooled, and all received between 6 and 7.2-stars on the FirstRate assessments.
Water use is being minimised through centralised rainwater collection for toilet flushing, subsurface irrigation from the stormwater dam, and electronically controlled shower timers, and wind turbines producing up to 90kW of power are also proposed for the development, coupled with photovoltaic solar panels located on the administration building. |

Brisbane Immigration Transit Accommodation |
Sugarmill Rd, Pinkenba QLD |
The Immigration Transit Accommodation centre is a low security centre designed to provide “motel style” short term accommodation to persons with minor immigration and visa breaches.
The challenge was to deliver the facility on a low lying flood prone site within a stringent budget and short time frame. The accommodation was, also, required to meet exacting acoustic design parameters both eliminating external aircraft noise and inter-room separation. ESD initiatives are also employed including rainwater harvesting and low energy light fittings.
BITA provides 30 beds in double rooms in three separate 10 bed units. Some rooms are inter-leading pairs providing flexibility, accommodating families and extended families. Each unit has its own living area, with lounge, dining, TV, kitchenette and laundry facilities, allowing for discrete cultural separation. One unit is purpose designed to cater for persons with disability with undercover access from the central facilities building.
The residential scale, lack of hard security elements and soft ambience provided by the external and internal colour palettes and finishes give the centre a relaxed, non-institutional ‘feel’.
DIAC (now, the Department of Immigration and Citizenship) have expressed their overwhelming satisfaction for the completed facility and have commended the delivery team. |

Pine Rivers Courthouse & Watchhouse |
374 Gympie Rd, Strathpine QLD |
Developing further the model of legibility & openness, the Pine Rivers Courthouse & Watchhouse Complex provides a facility that utilises views and natural light. This provides a connection to the landscape from each of the three Courtrooms, a concept which is continued into the staffed areas of the Watchhouse.
Environmentally, the complex features solar water heating, dual plumbing for the use of grey-water collected from the site, and screened manipulation of natural light throughout the building.
Aesthetically the complex steps back from the density and randomness of Gympie Road, establishing a generous public forecourt, and a contrasting sense of simplicity, through the composition of the building fabric, contributing to the development of a sense of calmness when entering the complex. |

Caloundra Court House & Watchhouse |
Caloundra QLD |
Located in the Caloundra Health & Justice precinct, the Caloundra District and Magistrates Court Complex is comprised of two courts, support services, and associated Watch house facilities.
The contemporary design has been set back from the main road to accentuate the presence of the building in the landscape, and a sense of arrival. A simple legible planning concept, shared with controlled and screened views, were used to create an open and calming environment for both the staff and public. |

Acacia Prison |
Wooroloo WA |
Acacia Prison was the first prison in Western Australia to be delivered under a design, construct, maintain and operate contract.
The 750-bed medium security men’s prison, expandable to 900 beds, was designed as a campus-style prison, with accommodation units and other facilities laid out in clusters in landscaped grounds. Our design objective was to develop an internal environment that best approximates a normal community".
The medium-security facility housed level 1, 2 and 3 prisoners in separate accommodation blocks, together with a crisis-care wing, geriatric wing, and detention block. Other facilities included:
• Gatehouse and movement controls
• Visitor reception building outside secure perimeter
